Charity Partnerships

Hammerson is committed to creating positive places and partnerships with charities is fundamental to this commitment. We take both a corporate and local approach to our philanthropic charitable activity and focus on four guiding principles where we believe we have the greatest potential for positive change: Developing Young People, Health and Wellbeing, Employment & Skills and Enterprise. The principles ensure our charitable activity is local directed but remains focused and effective. On this page, you will learn more about how we partner and collaborate with charities.

Corporate Charity Partnerships

Hammerson has longstanding and continuous relationships with LandAid and the retailTrust. As Corporate Charity Partners we provide an annual donation to support their work and seek to maximise fundraising opportunities across our portfolio.


LandAid is the property industry charity working to end youth homelessness in the UK. LandAid brings together businesses and individuals from across the industry to support charities delivering life-changing projects for young people who are or have been homeless, or who are at risk of homelessness.

Hammerson has partnered with LandAid since 2005. As a Strategic Partner, Hammerson is extensively involved in LandAid’s flagship events. Each year Hammerson employees engage in LandAid’s SleepOut events raising funds to support their vital work. In 2021, employees from across the business participated in the virtual LandAid SleepOut event raising over £4,000 to support young people who are homeless.


Established in 1832, retailTRUST is the retail industry’s charity. The charity seeks to improve the wellbeing of retail employees and their families through emotional, physical, vocational and financial support. They support retail employees throughout their lives, from getting into retail all the way through to retirement. The charity offers a diverse range of services and programmes including career development, emotional support and counselling, and legal and financial assistance.

Hammerson works closely with retailTRUST to provide seed funding and scholarships to support the next generation of retail talent.

UK & Ireland Employee Charity Partner 2020-22: The Outward Bound Trust

Every two years we select a UK & Ireland Employee Charity Partner through employee nominations. Following nominations, we invite shortlisted charities to present at a breakfast meeting where employees vote for the charity that they feel our support will have the greatest impact. 

In February 2020, employees voted overwhelmingly to continue our charity partnership with The Outward Bound Trust for a further two years. The Outward Bound Trust is an educational charity that uses the outdoors to help develop young people from all walks of life. In addition to a cash donation, we identify opportunities to maximize our partnership, developing a strong relationship between the charity and employees. This partnership is in place until June 2022.

Positive Place Bursaries Scheme (Centre Charity Bursaries)

Each of our Shopping Centres is allocated an annual bursary to support a local charity, or charities, of their choice. The Centre team selects a charity to be the recipient of their annual bursary; the selected charity must address local needs and issues within the parameters of our guiding priorities.

The Centre Charity Partner, or Partners, receive a cash donation, as well as space in the mall to fundraise and support from the Centre team to strengthen their relationship with the local community.

If you are interested in applying for funding under our Positive Places Bursary Scheme, please contact us at The selection process takes place annually in the spring. Charities considered must have a strong presence within the local communities adjacent to our centres, or in London, the Boroughs of Barnet or Croydon.

Hammerson policy dictates we do not support charities with religious or political connections or affiliation unless there is a clear and acceptable charitable aim for the activity proposed that aligns with at least one of our four guiding priorities.

Employee Match Funding 

Hammerson is committed to supporting our employees making a positive difference to our communities through charitable fundraising. Hammerson provides match funding of up to £250 or €250 per employee’s fundraiser for their chosen charity.

In 2020, Hammerson provided match funding to 25 charities including Breast Cancer Haven, The Alzheimer's Society, Women’s Aid and Blue Cross.
