8 UK Shopping Centre Jobs Fairs

With the launch of our new Community Engagement Report, we are celebrating each of the headline achievements featured. Here we introduce a couple of the 8 Jobs Fairs delivered between 2013 and 2016.

With a dedicated programme of works to develop skills and employment at every shopping centre, retail park and development scheme, it is important to drive awareness in the local community of job opportunities that exist. Over the past three years we have hosted 8 UK shopping centre Jobs Fairs, and supported a whole host of further activities with local employment providers. 

The story behind a couple of our Jobs Fairs

WestQuay Jobs Fair

WestQuay has hosted the annual city jobs fair for the last few years. The WestQuay Watermark development has taken rapid shape over the past few years, and presents the opportunity of hundreds of jobs, so it makes sense that the WestQuay team would support this major employment event for local Southampton residents.

The Jobs Fair was attended by over 1000 local people and 50 local employers. The annual event is an opportunity to promote the development, job opportunities at Westquay and add value to the local community. The event reinforces how important Hammerson brands are to the local community and the role we can play as an enabler to support people into work, as well as supporting tenants with recruitment.


Leeds Apprenticeship Fair

The major development of Victoria Gate in Leeds has supported 19 apprentices to date. The Leeds Development Team and Leeds City Council joined up to deliver an Apprentice Fair at the start of 2016 to celebrate the achievements over the past three years. 

Part of National Apprenticeship Week, this provided a unique opportunity for employers from Leeds and the West Yorkshire region to promote details of their current and forthcoming apprentice vacancies. 

116 employers supported the event and over 5,000 people attended the event which far surpassed the number Leeds City Council were anticipating.




The Brent Cross Job Shop 


In 2015 the Brent Cross Retail job Shop celebrated a successful first year, having found new jobs for over 90 previously unemployed applicants. The job Shop was awarded a certificate of ‘Exceptional Retailer Support’ in the Annual Customer Service Awards.

Councillor Daniel Thomas, Chairman of Assets, Regeneration and Growth Committee for the London Borough of Barnet, said: “This award is a recognition of the fantastic work that the team at the Brent Cross Retail Job Shop has been doing to help people find jobs with a wide range of employers. A year into the project, this is a great example of how good partnership working – between the council, Re, Brent Cross and Job Centre Plus – is able to deliver excellent results for all parties.”

Established in 2014, the Job Shop was a collaboration between Brent Cross Shopping Centre, Job Centre Plus and the London Borough of Barnet. It aimed to link retailers and employers with potential candidates from across the borough. Brent Cross provided both retail space and support to get the Jobs Shop off the ground and deliver services throughout 2014/2015.

“I had been looking for work from some time, and I was keen to get back into retail. The Job Shop made finding a new job more straight forward, and it’s great to be back at work. It’s a fantastic resource for local people who are looking for jobs.”

Gigs Kyricas, placed in a role at Charles Tyrwhitt, Brent Cross, as a result of the Job Shop.

In one year alone, the Job Shop engaged with over 40 employers, and screen candidates on their behalf. Retailers included Fenwicks, Marks and Spencer, Monsoon and Victoria Secrets. 93 previously unemployed applicants have entered new jobs.
