Saints Foundation and Hammerson announce Active Families initiative

22 Aug 2016

In partnership with the Saints Foundation, we have today announced the launch of an initiative to provide the local community with a programme of events specifically targeted at low-income, inactive families who are in need of support

The project is aimed at informing people how to change their lifestyles by giving them the tools to develop healthier eating and exercise habits for the whole family.

The programme was created following data released by the NHS revealing the health profile of people living in Southampton, revealing that the life expectancy was almost eight years lower for men than the average and three years lower for women in the most deprived areas, and that almost 20% of children aged 10-11 are classified as obese.

Southampton City Council and Radian are supporting the programme by identifying individuals from low income deprived areas to take part in the scheme and are hoping to engage 28 families from across Southampton as part of a city-wide Public Health campaign. This programme is all part of the wider Watermark Community Plan, which invests in Health and Wellbeing, Enterprise, Youth and Skills – building upon the work already undertaken with TV chef Shelina Permalloo in 2015.

In association with Pizza Express in WestQuay, families will be given the opportunity to take part in a three-day healthy cooking workshop that will inform attendees how to lead a balanced healthy life and provide them with the knowledge to help them make positive lifestyle choices. Working with a variety of restaurants throughout WestQuay, a total of seven workshops will then be hosted, offering sessions on simple food preparation and healthy cooking techniques that can be easily implemented at home - for instance grilling instead of frying - alongside general healthy tips and ideas to engage young people.

On completion of the Active Families programme, participants will be rewarded with a fun family activity day at Moores Valley Country Park, where they will be able to take part in a bike ride, country trial and family picnic.
